Good Enough.
Embrace Who You Are. Unleash Your Brilliance.
The Good Enough book is intended to start a conversation and to provide a pathway forward with clear strategies and practices, to bust through some of the myths we have about who we are and what is possible for our lives. Through the women’s stories, we show you it is possible to create compelling and impactful shifts in your life, career and “embrace who you are and unleash your brilliance”.
Embrace Who You Are.
The Good Enough book was a 3 1/2 year passion project. Initially, we intended to talk with 20-30 women to explore what gets in the way of feeling fulfilled, confident, and taking a risk to express their fullest potential. We very quickly discovered we’d hit a nerve, and this conversation had energy.
Interviews led to more interviews, and our desire to learn and uncover the key challenges and importantly, how to overcome them, become all-consuming. The scope of the book expanded to include hearing from over 350 women, through more than 150 interviews and focus groups, and the results of an extensive survey.
We wanted women to feel free to talk openly with us, and we have created aliases for each of them. We are deeply grateful for each woman who shared her heart and story with us. Women were generous with their time, and in entrusting us to listen and to capture the meaning of their story.
It was an incredible honour and privilege.
What did we find out?
Many successful and accomplished women get entangled in feeling not good enough, and if you’ve ever felt this way, let me reassure you, you are not alone. Self-doubt, self-judging and the habit of comparing ourselves to others contributes to feeling less than what we desire to be.
Whether it’s feeling not bright enough, qualified, credentialed or prepared enough, attractive enough or confident enough, the undercurrent is “I’m not good enough”. The experience of feeling not good enough is, and when women conquered feelings of inadequacy, their next battle was the imposter experience, questioning their competency, prompting them to back down with a message of “who do you think you are to do that?”
Companion Workbook
Since publishing the book, we heard from women in book clubs and associations who wanted a workbook. Today, we are happy to announce that we also have a companion Good Enough workbook, offering reflective questions, strategies and new practices.
More Reviews
Rich in resources and references to other books, Good Enough gives you the opportunity and information to explore other avenues for personal development. Near the end of the book, Day and Vodarek lean into values. “Too often, we are quick to blame ourselves if a job or relationship isn’t working out, but perhaps it’s not us. Perhaps it is more that our values are not in alignment with the workplace or the person. When we step back and look from the outside in, it can be easier to see what needs to happen, and perhaps no one is to blame, it is just not a good fit.” They highlight how women may constantly be searching for an answer, or trying to figure out what they did wrong at work, at home, or in life, but the answer isn’t always what we did wrong; sometimes it’s not the individual, it is just not a good match. This thought leads into conclusion that it’s ok if everything is not the perfect fit, it’s ok to say no, and it’s important to know your balance.
The Bottom-line: The book covers a lot of stories that show how women constantly feel judged and constantly feel like they are not living up to expectations – like they are not good enough. This theme runs through every story throughout the entire book. Day and Vodarek make note of every story and illustrate why each woman didn’t feel ‘good enough’ and then turn around to show how they were good enough – and – how in turn, you can turn your self-doubt around as well. The bottom-line: you are good enough. Recommendation: Although this book focuses on women and self-confidence, it is a book that anyone can pick up if you are in need of some reassurance; you are not alone. I recommend giving this a read and using the real life stories as tools to position yourself in the positive direction you’d like to go!
